Efie, the Twi word for ‘home’, reflects the idea of belonging through culture, history, and identity for communities across the world. Founded by Kwame and Kobi Mintah, Efie Gallery has rapidly become a cornerstone of Dubai’s contemporary African art scene. Set to open its doors in the trendy Alserkal Avenue, with a new two-storey, 4,400 sq. ft. space and a monumental solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed Cuban artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons this April, Efie Gallery is poised to make a significant impact.
Renovated in collaboration with architect Suhaira Yousif, the gallery provides a permanent space where African artists of all origins can showcase their work, facilitating dynamic cultural exchange. It is not only a hub for visual art but also a place where African culture resonates across the Middle East, drawing connections between diverse communities through artistic expression.
The family-run gallery continues to be directed by Kwame Mintah, whose commitment to cross-cultural dialogue has helped bridge the gap between African artists and Dubai’s vibrant art community. Through its dynamic residency programme, the gallery facilitates collaborations between local and international artists, encouraging the exchange of ideas and artistic practices. This cultural fusion enriches Dubai’s art scene, positioning the city as a key player in the global creative economy. The Mintah family’s vision for the gallery aligns with their belief in fostering a vibrant ecosystem that brings together diverse cultures and artistic voices.
Situated in Dubai’s leading cultural district, Efie Gallery hosts a range of important exhibitions and events that highlight African art and its global influence.
The opening exhibition, I Am Soil. My Tears Are Water, will present new works by gallery artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons, curated by Faridah Folawiyo. The exhibition will focus on flora and fauna native to Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, exploring diaspora and the interconnectedness of all life.
Art Dubai is a leading contemporary art fair in the Middle East, showcasing global art across various mediums. This year, Efie Gallery will participate again, highlighting contemporary African art and fostering cross-cultural dialogue, strengthening Dubai’s role as a cultural hub.
A film and photography show featuring prominent artists such as Kelani Abass, Sumayah Fallatah, and Samuel Fosso will be curated by Ose Ekore.
The gallery will present The Birth of a People, a show of modern African art featuring works from 1957 to 1999, followed by The Shape of Things to Come, curated by Dexter Wimberly.
Efie Gallery’s founders, Kwame and Kobi Mintah, have worked tirelessly to create a space that not only showcases African art but also supports artists through various programmes. Their deep connection to Ghanaian heritage informs the gallery’s mission, creating a cultural hub that reflects their values of community, creativity, and collaboration. As a permanent space in the trendy Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, the gallery continues to provide a platform for artists to connect, grow, and contribute to the global art conversation.
Efie Gallery has transformed Dubai’s art world, making contemporary African art more visible in the UAE and beyond. With its permanent space and diverse programming, the gallery has become a vital part of the city’s artistic landscape. Its exhibitions, which combine traditional African themes with modern artistic practices, provide a platform for meaningful cultural exchange. As it grows, Efie Gallery remains a significant player in fostering dialogue and celebrating the diverse voices of African artists in the Middle East.
